NOVA SCOTIA
A young man from Dartmouth has been sentenced to nine months in jail, followed by probation, for possessing child pornography.
Jordan Angus McDougall, 26, pleaded guilty to the charge in November and was sentenced this week in Dartmouth provincial court.
Judge Amy Sakalauskas accepted a joint sentencing recommendation from Crown attorney Rob Kennedy and defence lawyer Tony Amoud.
McDougall was arrested in June 2021 after members of the Halifax Regional Police-RCMP internet child exploitation unit, acting on a tip from the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, executed a search warrant at his residence.
An examination of McDougall’s electronic devices revealed he had downloaded about 240 images of child pornography and had obtained explicit images of girls he had communicated with on the internet.
He was charged with possessing and distributing child pornography and luring someone under the age of 18 on the internet for the purpose of facilitating an offence.
After he gets out of jail, McDougall will be on probation for two years. He will not be allowed to consume or possess alcohol or drugs and cannot be within 25 metres of any parks, playgrounds, schools, community centres or other places where children under the age of 16 are likely to be present.
McDougall was also directed to attend for counselling for mental health, substance abuse, anger management and any other issues as directed by his probation supervisor.
He must not associate with or be in the company of anyone under the age of 16 unless a parent or guardian is present and is not to work or volunteer in any job that would place him in a position of trust or authority over children.
While on probation, McDougall can only access the internet for employment, banking and education purposes.
The judge also ordered McDougall to register as a sex offender for 10 years and provide a sample of his DNA for a national databank.
The other two charges against McDougall were withdrawn after he was sentenced.
