A volunteer camp counsellor facing child pornography-related charges after allegedly filming a 6-year-old in a washroom was “in the hiring process” to become a Peel police officer, Peel Regional Police said Thursday.

“He was in the hiring process, which we have since terminated,” Sgt. Sarah Patten said at a media briefing Thursday.

“He was never employed with (Peel Regional Police),” she said.

On Wednesday police charged the counsellor, a 26-year-old Mississauga man, with voyeurism and the possession, making available and making of child pornography after he allegedly filmed a 6-year-old child in a camp washroom.

The man had worked as a volunteer camp counsellor at MC Day Camp near Lakeshore Road East and Hurontario Street in Mississauga since June 2018, according to police.

Police said the alleged filming took place between December 2022 and July of this year while the child was “in a state of undress” in the washroom.

Patten said the child went to their parents, who contacted police.

Investigators executed a search warrant at the man’s residence, where they found evidence to suggest there may be more victims.

Police are asking anyone who may have had contact with the man to call its internet child exploitation unit at 905-453-2121 ext. 3490 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

“We want to communicate to the public and to parents that communication is key in these circumstances … a child of that age or a young person may be involved in a situation and not understand the severity of it,” Patten said.

“So we want parents to communicate with their kids … and hopefully bring out this information as early as possible,” she said.

Alexander Clarke, 26, of Mississauga, has been arrested and charged with voyeurism, possession of child pornography, making child pornography and making available child pornography.
