US basketball player charged with sexual assault in St. John’s gets bail

Accused was in town to play basketball against the Newfoundland Rogues

A 29-year-old man from the United States charged with sexually assaulting a woman at a downtown St. John’s hotel has been released from custody.

Provincial court Judge Harold Porter granted Raekwon Holliman bail after a short hearing Thursday, March 6.

Details of the evidence presented at the hearing are banned from publication to protect Holliman’s right to a fair trial. The identity of the complainant is also covered by a publication ban.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it received a report of an assault at a hotel shortly after 3 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28. Officers arrived to find a woman requiring medical help.

Holliman was arrested later in the day.

Holliman is a member of the Rochester Kingz basketball team, which was in St. John’s to play three games against the Newfoundland Rogues.

Holliman is scheduled to make his next court appearance on the sexual assault charge in St. John’s April 16.

In the meantime, his bail conditions allow him to return to the United States with a series of strict conditions, including a $5,000 cash deposit from one surety, pledges from two others for a total of $3,000, and orders to be of good behaviour, have no contact with the complainant, and appear in court when scheduled.

Porter noted that, generally, the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act sees cooperation between Canada and the United States in cases where a person who lives in one country is charged with a crime in another, and doesn’t show up for court when they’re supposed to.

The act allows authorities to request that the person be arrested and sent back across the border to face their charges.
