A 59-year-old Lethbridge man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly held a woman against her will for days and repeatedly sexually assaulted her.

According to the Lethbridge Police Department, this is the second time the Bernard Alonzo Gibson has been charged with such a crime in as many months, as he was out on bail when the most recent crime took place.

According to a news release, the man was arrested Thursday after the landlord of a home in the Agnes Davidson neighbourhood found the victim in the home’s basement.

Emergency crews brought the victim, a 30-year-old woman, to Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were described as “extensive,” and officials say she remains in hospital.

Investigators determined that the victim met a man earlier this month outside of Lethbridge and she was driven to the city. When she arrived, she was brought to the southside home, held against her will and sexually assaulted over the course of four days.

While police were investigating the scene, a man matching the suspect description returned to the home, and officers arrested him, the release states.

Gibson is facing charges of aggravated sexual assault, unlawful confinement and failing to comply with bail conditions stemming from a previous and similar incident two months ago.

In that case, the man allegedly held a woman against her will and assaulted her over the course of two days before she was able to escape.

Gibson remains in custody. He is expected to appear in court Tuesday.
