NEW BRUNSWICK-The chief of St. Mary's First Nation, Chief Allan (Chicky) Polchies is facing one count of sexual assault and one count of assault.
The assaults are alleged to have taken place in Fredericton around March 2, 2019.
The information filed by Const. Andrew Miller of the Fredericton police does not list the age or gender of the alleged victim, or any details about the alleged incident.
Chief Polchies did not respond to a CBC News request for comment.
His lawyer, Jennifer Ingram of the Burke Law Group, would only say that Polchies is "aware of the allegations, he's dealing with them through the proper channels and he has complete faith in the court process."
The allegations surface at a time when the Assembly of First Nations annual general assembly is set to take place in Fredericton, officially beginning Tuesday.
The day begins with an event hosted by St. Mary's First Nation.
Polchies is due back in court on Oct. 15.

Lethbridge police are investigating after a 51-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by two males Thursday night around 10 p.m. in an alley on the north side.
The victim told police she was walking through the alley along the 1900 block of Sixth Avenue North, when she ran into two men, who asked for money.
When she said she didn’t have any, they sexually assaulted her.
The two men fled the area on bicycles. The woman called police, and was taken to hospital.
The first suspect was described as an Aboriginal male, around six feet tall, wearing jeans.
The second suspecct was described as an Aboriginal male, with short hair and a pock-marked face. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt and jeans.
Police are requesting that anyone in the surrounding area contact them if they have security cameras of if they saw or heard anything suspicious between 8 p.m. and midnight.

Lethbridge police are investigating after a 51-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by two males Thursday night around 10 p.m. in an alley on the north side. Police have released an image of a man suspected of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy on a subway train.
